Counselling

"The act of revealing oneself fully to another and still being accepted may be the major vehicle of therapeutic help."

Irvin D Yalom - Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist, Author, Teacher

Years of research shows that the relationship built between counsellor and client is the most important predictor to the outcome of therapy.

First Session

The first session will be an Assessment. You can outline your reason for coming to see me and I will ask questions about you and your family history. There will be a questionnaire to fill in.

It is more of a structured session, and helps both of us to get a better idea of what your difficulties are. Sometimes people don't know what the problem is, they are just unhappy. This doesn't matter as it will become clearer with more sessions.  It is quite normal for clients to be nervous at this stage.

Assessments usually take about an hour.  Once you have been assessed we make another two appointments.  I like to see clients weekly as this helps to build our relationship more quickly.

I will periodically review progress with you. This gives us both a chance to talk about how things are going, and provides a continued focus for the counselling work. I am always happy to answer any questions about the counselling sessions.

My Approach

I am trained to actively listen, understand your point of view and to accept you as you are. This unique relationship is supportive and enormously comforting. Everyone experiences problems in their lives. Family and friends can be a help. Sometimes though, people feel they need an outsiders view, to help them see things from a different perspective.

Problems are experienced differently by each person. In turn this means your therapy will evolve from the unique relationship you make with me.

Most issues clients bring are about relationships that aren't working well.  Understanding how you relate to others will be the most important thing you learn in counselling. Seeing your situation differently, and changing behaviours that are detrimental will always influence relationships.

Many of my counselling clients extend their sessions once their issue is resolved for Personal Development. This involves spending more time learning about what makes them tick as an individual, changing unhelpful habits or behaviours and uncovering hidden strengths so that they can fulfil their potential.
